It is an initiative of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), coordinated by the National Education and Research Network (RNP), which aims to implement high-speed networks in the metropolitan regions of the country served by RNP Points of Presence. The adopted model is based on the implementation of its own fiber optic infrastructure aimed at higher education and research institutions and on the formation of consortiums between participating institutions to ensure their self-sustenance. The consortia must be made up of research and education institutions located in the same metropolitan region where there is a RNP point of presence. They can be formed by a variable number of participants, integrating public and private institutions, and their participation should be funded with their own resources.
The metropolitan networks participating in the Redecomep project will receive support from RNP for its implementation. Subsequently, the consortium formed by the institutions that use the infrastructure must bear the costs of its operation, maintenance and eventual expansion.
The resources provided by the MCT will be used for contracting the physical network deployment services, acquisition of access equipment (one switch per access point) as well as training for its operation.
